On January 1, 1980, Juneteenth became an official state holiday in Texas because of Al Edwards, a Black state. Juneteenth, the official freeing of enslaved people on June 19, 1865, in Texas, is one of the most important events in American history. A Senate Bill introduced in 2018 passed, which designates June 19 as Juneteenth Independence Day in recognition of Jthe date on which slavery legally came to an end in the United States. Now our country comes together to honor the significance of Juneteenth, or “Freedom Day,” as a day to reflect on our nation’s complicated history and shared diversity. On June 19, 1865, in Galveston, Texas, Union Major General Gordon Granger informed enslaved individuals that the Civil War had ended and that they were now free, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. On Sunday, Airlines for America (A4A) will join the nation in celebrating Juneteenth, a day that represents freedom, hope and liberation.
